An extension buys time to file. It doesn't buy time to pay.
Anyone can file Form 4868 in ten minutes. The form takes the filing deadline to October 15, 2027. The tax is still due April 15, 2027, and the IRS charges a penalty on whatever you haven't paid by then.
The exception is the 90% rule. Pay at least 90% of your actual tax by the original deadline, pay the rest with the return, and the IRS treats the shortfall as reasonable cause under Treas. Reg. §301.6651-1(c)(3). No late-payment penalty at all. Hitting 90% of a number you haven't calculated yet is the hard part, and it's the part I do for you.

Penalties only, for a 2026 return due April 15, 2027 and filed October 15, 2027. Failure to file is 5% a month, capped at 25%, reduced by the failure-to-pay penalty for months both apply (IRC §6651(a)(1) and (c)(1)): 4.5% × 5 months. Failure to pay is 0.5% a month (IRC §6651(a)(2)). Interest runs on any unpaid balance from April 15 in every case.
More than a form. Every piece of it free.

Form 4868, filed for you
Your federal extension, e-filed with the IRS, which moves your filing deadline to October 15, 2027. You get the acceptance confirmation.
- 02
An estimate of what you owe
I build it from last year's return and what changed this year, then give you one number to pay and the exact way to pay it. This is the part that saves money.
- 03
Your state, handled
Utah extends automatically, but only if you prepay 90% of this year's Utah tax or 100% of last year's by the April deadline. I tell you which test you meet and what to send. Other states get the same check.
- 04
Your business return too
Own an S corp or a partnership? Its return is due March 15, 2027, a month before yours. I file Form 7004 to move it to September 15, 2027.
- 05
A second set of eyes on last year
I'm reading your prior return anyway. If something on it looks wrong, I'll tell you, and whether it's worth fixing.

How it works

Answer six questions.
Takes about a minute. It tells me what the estimate needs.
- 2
Upload last year's return.
Through my encrypted Encyro portal, right after the form.
- 3
I estimate and file.
You get the payment amount, how to pay it, and the IRS confirmation.
- 4
You decide what's next.
Hire me for the return, or don't. The extension is yours either way.
Who this is for, and who should skip it
A good fit
- A business owner whose S corp or partnership books aren't closed, or who's waiting on a K-1.
- Someone with RSUs, options, or ESPP shares whose 1099-B basis doesn't look right.
- A rental owner who bought, sold, or started depreciating a property this year.
- Anyone who moved states mid-year and now owes two of them.
Skip it
If you have one W-2 and expect a refund, you don't need me. The failure-to-file penalty is a percentage of tax owed, so with nothing owed there's nothing to charge, and IRS Free File handles Form 4868 in a few minutes if you want one anyway. I'd rather tell you that than take up your afternoon.
Questions people ask first
What's the catch?
I'm hoping you'll hire me to prepare the return. That's the whole catch. The extension shows me your situation and shows you how I work. If you'd rather finish the return yourself or take it somewhere else, you keep the filed extension and the estimate, and you owe me nothing.
Does filing an extension raise my audit odds?
No. An extension is a routine form, and the IRS processes millions of them every year. What draws attention is what's on the return, not when it arrives. A rushed return with a wrong cost basis is a bigger risk than a careful one filed in September.
What if I can't pay what I owe by April 15, 2027?
File the extension anyway. It removes the failure-to-file penalty, which runs 5% a month under IRC §6651(a)(1), ten times the 0.5% failure-to-pay rate. Pay what you can by the deadline and set up a payment plan for the rest.
How to pay a balance dueWhen do you actually file it?
Once I have your answers and last year's return, and once the IRS opens e-file for the 2026 season (usually late January). You get the IRS acceptance confirmation by email. Requests close April 8, 2027, a week before the deadline, so I have time to do the estimate properly.
Is it safe to upload my tax return?
Yes. Documents go through Encyro, an encrypted, audit-logged portal, never email and never this form. The form only collects your answers and contact details.
I already missed the deadline. Can you still help?
Yes, but not with an extension. Once the due date passes, the next best move is filing as soon as possible to stop the 5% monthly penalty. Send me a message and I'll tell you what it's costing you.

Free requests close April 8, 2027. It takes about five minutes, including the upload.
